MUSEE CARNAVALET - MUSEE DE L'HISTOIRE DE PARIS
Museum
District : Marais / Les Halles
Description :
Nestled within the Marais, the Musée Carnavalet chronicles the history of the capital from its origins to our day. It is housed in two mansions built in the 11th and 17th centuries, with a gallery now leading from one to the other...
The Hôtel Carnavalet, after which the museum is named, was once the home of Madame de Sévigné, who wrote a series of famous letters to her daughter. It now hosts the museum’s collections from pre-historical times to the reign of Louis XVI, while the Hôtel Le Peletier Saint-Fargeau contains pieces dating from the French Revolution to the present day. _ As you wander through the rooms of the museum, you will discover prehistoric, medieval or Revolutionary mementoes ranging from furniture and painting to objets d’art and everyday items.
Don’t miss the exhibition titled “À Carnavalet, les meubles se dévoilent”, on until 21 January, which focuses on the museum’s significant collection of furniture.

Informations :
Opened in 1880, this museum is devoted to the history of Paris from its origins to recent times. It occupies two adjoining mansions- the hôtels Carnavalet and le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau- and displays exceptional collections: rich archaeological artefacts of the Gallo-Roman and Medieval periods, memorabilia from the French Revolution, paintings, sculpture, furniture and 'objets d'art' that recreate the atmosphere of private residences from the 15th to the 19th centuries. A room with drawings, prints and photographs complete this unique heritage. The orangery at the hotel le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau was built at the end of the 17th century. The building was renovated from 1925 in order to welcome archeological collections, (which were moved to the new venue at Bercy in the beginning of 2000). It was also during the year 2000 that the orangery was fully renovated. Since December 2000, the building has presented collections illustrating the city's most distant past up to the Gallo-Roman Lutèce period. The Musée Carnavalet also includes the Crypte Archéologique du Parvis Notre Dame and the Catacombs of Paris.
